Overview

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterium that causes a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs commonly referred to as “kennel cough.” This infection is prevalent in environments where dogs are in close contact with each other, such as kennels, dog parks, and grooming facilities.

Symptoms

Dogs with Bordetella infection may exhibit a range of symptoms, including:

  • Persistent, dry cough
  • Gagging or retching
  • Nasal discharge
  • Sneezing
  • Mild fever
  • Reduced appetite

Transmission

Bordetella bronchiseptica is spread through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing and by direct contact with contaminated surfaces. Dogs can contract the bacteria from other infected dogs or from environments where the bacteria are present.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Bordetella is typically based on a dog’s clinical signs and history, particularly if they have been in contact with other dogs. Your veterinarian may perform a physical examination and, in some cases, recommend additional diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of Bordetella.

Treatment

Treatment for Bordetella depends on the severity of the symptoms. Mild cases often resolve on their own with supportive care, which includes:

  • Rest and isolation from other dogs to prevent spread
  • Humidified air to ease coughing
  • Adequate hydration and nutrition

In more severe cases, your veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics or other medications to manage the infection and alleviate symptoms.

Prevention

Preventive measures include:

  • Vaccination: The Bordetella vaccine is highly recommended for dogs, especially those in high-risk environments.
  • Good hygiene: Regular cleaning of living areas and avoiding contact with infected dogs can help reduce the risk of infection.
  • Avoiding exposure: Keep your dog away from areas with known outbreaks or where many dogs congregate.
