Overview

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that primarily affects dogs and is transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis). It is most commonly seen in areas where these ticks are prevalent, including parts of the San Fernando Valley. Understanding Lyme disease and its prevention is crucial for the health and well-being of your pet.

Symptoms

Signs of Lyme disease in dogs may vary and can include:

  • Lameness: Sudden limping or stiffness, often shifting from leg to leg.
  • Fever: Elevated body temperature.
  • Swollen Joints: Inflammation around joints.
  • Loss of Appetite: Decreased interest in food.
  • Fatigue: General lethargy and weakness.
  • Tenderness: Sensitivity to touch, especially around the joints.

Diagnosis

To diagnose Lyme disease, our veterinarians will typically perform:

  • Physical Examination: Checking for symptoms and signs of tick-borne illness.
  • Blood Tests: To detect antibodies against the Lyme disease bacteria and rule out other conditions.

Treatment

Treatment for Lyme disease usually involves:

  • Antibiotics: Doxycycline or another suitable antibiotic to eliminate the bacteria.
  • Pain Management: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to alleviate joint pain and inflammation.
  • Supportive Care: Including rest and a balanced diet to support recovery.

Prevention

Preventive measures include:

  • Tick Prevention: Using veterinarian-recommended tick preventatives, such as topical treatments, collars, or oral medications.
  • Regular Checks: Inspecting your dog for ticks after outdoor activities, especially in tick-prone areas.
  • Vaccination: Discuss with our veterinarians if Lyme disease vaccination is appropriate for your dog, particularly if you live in or frequently visit high-risk areas.

When to Seek Care

If you notice any symptoms of Lyme disease or if your dog has been in areas with high tick activity, seek veterinary care promptly. As an urgent care facility, Mission Veterinary Clinic is available for walk-in visits 7 days a week from 9 AM to 11 PM.
