What is Ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal infection that affects the skin, hair, and nails of pets. Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm but by dermatophytes, which are fungi that thrive on keratin, the protein found in skin and hair. Ringworm is contagious and can be transmitted to other animals and humans.

Symptoms of Ringworm

The symptoms of ringworm in pets may include:

  • Circular patches of hair loss
  • Red, scaly, or crusty skin
  • Itching or redness
  • Brittle or broken hair
  • Thickened, discolored nails

Diagnosis

To diagnose ringworm, a veterinarian will conduct a physical examination and may perform diagnostic tests such as:

  • Wood’s lamp examination (a special light used to detect fungal infections)
  • Fungal culture
  • Microscopic examination of hair and skin samples

Treatment

Ringworm treatment generally includes:

  • Antifungal medications, either topical (applied to the skin) or systemic (oral)
  • Regular cleaning and disinfecting of the pet’s environment
  • Shaving the affected areas to aid in treatment and reduce fungal spores in the environment

Prevention

To help prevent ringworm:

  • Maintain good hygiene and regular grooming for pets
  • Clean and disinfect areas where pets live and play
  • Avoid contact with infected animals or contaminated items
  • Regularly check your pets for signs of skin infections

When to Seek Veterinary Care

If you notice symptoms of ringworm in your pet or suspect that your pet may be infected, seek veterinary care promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in managing the infection and preventing its spread.
